Who Whom, the enigmatic techno offshoot of Hotflush Recordings, returns with a new face in the HF universe – a veteran of labels including Klockworks and his own 808 Recordings, it’s Spanish native Yoikol.
This EP is techno at its most atmospheric and dancefloor-focused. Three originals plus a remix from Scuba in his SCB guise combine depth, weight, and a deftness of touch typical to the label.
Opener ‘Side By Side’ sets the scene with peak-time intent. A high-impact synth line combines with thunderous percussion to make a powerful statement. ‘The Deepest Feeling’ continues the theme, with the addition of some jacking stabs that move the mood into classic Berlin territory.
The two versions of title track ‘Degradation’ complement each other to round off the EP. The original focuses on the cavernous pads and intricate percussion that feature heavily in the track, while label-boss Scuba’s ‘SCB Edit’ takes the vibe into territory firmly suited to a heavy system at 4am.
